The SPOOLOGIC SL-100-027 is a brand new, direct drop-in Stage 1 performance turbocharger for 2003 Ford F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty trucks and 2003 Ford Excursions with the 6.0L Powerstroke. Built on the larger GT3788VA big-frame VGT platform — the same architecture Ford later ran on the 6.4L Powerstroke — with a massive 63mm 7+7 billet extended-tip compressor wheel, a brand new unison ring and vane assembly, and a ceramic-coated turbine housing and center section, the SL-100-027 is the biggest 6.0L-fitment turbo in the SPOOLOGIC early-6.0L lineup.
It’s the right turbo for owners who’ve moved past a stock or Stock Plus GT3782VA and want real airflow headroom — more aggressive than the Stock Plus, still built on the factory VGT control system, but sized to support meaningfully more power once the truck is tuned and supported correctly.
⚠ CUSTOM TUNING RECOMMENDED — READ BEFORE YOU BUY
Custom tuning is highly recommended to get the full potential out of this turbo. The SL-100-027 will physically bolt up and run on the factory tune because it retains the factory electronic VGT control system — but the factory calibration is written for the factory GT3782VA wheels. It does not know how to take advantage of the larger 63mm billet compressor, the GT3788VA big-frame turbine, or the upgraded internals. You leave a meaningful amount of airflow, response, and top-end on the table without a tune.
To unlock what this turbo was built to do, plan on a custom tune from a qualified 6.0L Powerstroke tuner. SPOOLOGIC does not supply, write, sell, or assist with custom tunes — please line up your tuning shop before the install if you want the truck to perform the way this turbo was designed to.
Power Support
The SL-100-027 is built to cleanly support up to ~425-450 rwhp when paired with proper tuning, fueling, and supporting modifications. Remember: a turbo doesn’t make power on its own — tuning and fueling make power, and the turbo’s job is to support what the engine is producing. The Stage 1 is sized to keep up with mild-to-moderate tunes and supporting mods without surging, choking, or overspeeding.
Choose Your Finish
Use the dropdown above to select your compressor housing finish. The 63mm 7+7 billet compressor wheel, GT3788VA big-frame turbine, ceramic-coated turbine housing and center section, and new VGT solenoid / unison ring / vanes are standard on every variation.
Compressor Housing Finish
- Ceramic Coated — Full thermal barrier on the compressor housing exterior in addition to the standard turbine-side ceramic coating, for maximum heat management in the engine bay
- Polished — Show-quality polished aluminum finish on the compressor housing
- Uncoated — Raw cast aluminum, no coating or polish
63mm 7+7 Billet Compressor Wheel
The Stage 1 steps up to a larger 63mm 7+7 billet extended-tip compressor wheel — significantly bigger than the factory GT3782VA cast wheel or the Stock Plus billet wheel — for noticeably more airflow, stronger top-end power, and lower EGTs under sustained load. Sized to feed a moderately built 6.0L without losing the off-idle drivability the VGT is known for.
- Inducer: 63.5mm
- Exducer: 88mm base / 94mm extended-tip outer diameter
- Blade count: 7+7 billet, extended-tip
- Material: 5-axis CNC-machined forged billet aluminum
- Balance: High-speed VSR balanced as part of the complete CHRA assembly
VGT Turbine Assembly
The SL-100-027 is built on the GT3788VA big-frame platform — a larger turbine housing and wheel than the factory GT3782VA, sized to flow the exhaust the 63mm compressor demands without choking the engine at higher airflow. It keeps the same electronically-actuated Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT) design as the factory turbo: a sliding vane ring that controls exhaust flow to the turbine for strong low-end response without the lag of a fixed-geometry turbo. Every SL-100-027 ships with a brand new unison ring and vane assembly — not reused, not reman’d — upgraded for the higher shaft speeds and exhaust flow of Stage 1 duty.
- Turbine inducer: 72.5mm
- Turbine exducer: 66.4mm
- Vane height: 15mm
Ceramic Coated Turbine Housing & Center Section
SPOOLOGIC ceramic coats both the turbine housing and the center section (CHRA) on the SL-100-027. This isn’t high-temp paint — it’s a true thermal barrier rated for the 1,600°F+ surface temperatures a diesel turbine sees under sustained load. The real, measurable benefits:
- Drops turbine housing surface temps 33-50% — far less radiant heat dumped into the engine bay, which protects wiring harnesses, oil lines, hoses, and EGR components from long-term heat damage
- Reduces post-shutdown heat soak into the CHRA and bearing oil — the #1 cause of premature turbo failure is oil baking on the bearing journals after shutdown, and the coating interrupts the radiant feedback loop that causes it
- Retains exhaust energy in the gas stream — keeping heat in the exhaust where it belongs (driving the turbine wheel) instead of soaking into the housing
- Corrosion and thermal-fatigue resistant — cast iron scales, pits, and cracks over years of heat cycling; the ceramic barrier protects the housing for the long haul
Upgraded Internals — Standard
Every SPOOLOGIC turbo is assembled with upgraded internal components that go beyond a basic factory-style replacement:
- Extreme duty journal bearings — premium bronze-alloy bearings machined to tighter tolerances with improved oil groove geometry, maintaining the precise oil film that keeps the turbo shaft centered at 100,000+ RPM — even under higher heat and shaft loads
- 360-degree thrust bearing — added strength and load capacity over the factory 270-degree bearing, better at handling boost-driven thrust loads
- Step gap seal rings — improved sealing performance, less blow-by past the CHRA
- High-speed VSR balancing — smooth, dependable operation and longer bearing life
6.0L Powerstroke — What You Need to Know
The 6.0L Powerstroke has a well-earned reputation for a handful of chronic problems — weaker factory head bolts that can let the head lift under sustained high boost/high EGT conditions, EGR cooler and valve issues, and oil cooler stiction that restricts oil flow and starves other components. None of that is caused by the turbo, and the SL-100-027 does not fix it. A Stage 1 turbo makes more air available; it does nothing to strengthen the head gasket joint or clean up a clogged oil cooler. The 6.0L’s bottom end can handle roughly 500 rwhp reliably, but only with the supporting work done first. If you’re building toward the top of this turbo’s power support range, plan on head studs, an EGR delete, and a proper tune before you push it there — not after something lets go.
Recommended Supporting Mods
The Stage 1 is built for trucks that have already taken at least the first step into the modified world. To get the most out of this turbo and keep everything running clean and safe at the top of its power support range, we recommend (all sold separately):
- Head studs — The factory head bolts are the 6.0L’s known weak point at sustained higher boost; studs clamp the head reliably where the stock bolts can let it lift
- EGR delete — Removes a major source of soot, heat, and restriction that contributes to oil cooler stiction and cracked EGR coolers on higher-mileage 6.0Ls
- Custom tune — A custom tune, or at minimum a quality canned tune, is the single biggest unlock for any 6.0L turbo upgrade and is required to safely use the added airflow
- Upgraded intercooler piping — Factory plastic end tanks are a common failure point under sustained higher boost; upgraded pipes hold up where stock pipes crack
- Oil cooler upgrade — Addresses the stiction issue at the root instead of relying on the factory cooler to keep flowing under higher load
