VGT Control
The solenoid meters engine oil to the hydraulic mechanism that moves the turbocharger vanes. The separate vane position sensor reports actual vane position to the engine controller; it performs a different function from the control solenoid.
Common VGT Control Fault Codes
- P0045: Turbocharger boost-control solenoid circuit fault.
- P0046: Turbocharger boost-control solenoid circuit range/performance.
Code availability varies by model year and calibration. A stored code does not prove the solenoid has failed.
Diagnose Before Replacing
Inspect the solenoid connector and wiring, engine oil condition and supply, and the vane mechanism. Compare commanded and actual vane position with a capable scan tool. A sticking vane mechanism or oil-supply problem can cause poor response even when the solenoid operates correctly.
Installation Notes
Keep debris out of the solenoid bore and oil passages. Inspect the seals, install the retaining bracket and bolt, and follow the GM service procedure for the specific turbocharger. Verify vane response after completing the repair.
