The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-012 is a complete VGT actuator upgrade kit for the V2S high-pressure turbocharger on 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke applications. This kit is built to the latest service specification that replaces the discontinued water-cooled Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) with a brushless, air-cooled actuator design. The upgrade eliminates the failure-prone plastic-gear drive, removes the water-cooling block entirely, and includes a new actuator bracket, thermal spacer, and all required mounting hardware. After install, the existing coolant lines reroute directly to the reservoir — the old actuator coolant block and short feed hose are no longer used. No external calibration required; the new actuator auto-calibrates on first key-on.

How the 6.4L V2S Turbo System Works

The 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke uses the BorgWarner V2S compound turbo system — a fixed-geometry low-pressure (LP) turbo feeding a variable-geometry high-pressure (HP) turbo. The HP turbo controls boost across the entire RPM range using a ring of pivoting vanes inside the turbine housing. An electronic actuator mounted on top of the HP turbo drives a rod arm that rotates the unison ring, which simultaneously pivots all of the vanes together. The original Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) used water cooling to survive the heat coming off the turbo. When the SRA fails — and they fail often — the vanes stop responding, boost goes erratic, and the truck throws P132B and related VGT codes.

Why the 6.4L Actuator Fails

The original BorgWarner Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) is the single most common failure on the 6.4L V2S turbo system. The SRA used plastic internal gears that strip when the actuator strains against a carbon-locked or sticking VGT mechanism, and its water-cooled motor housing was prone to coolant ingress and overheating. When the actuator fails, the rod arm stops rotating the unison ring properly, the vanes stick, and the ECM throws P132B (Turbocharger Boost Control "A" Performance) along with under/overboost codes. BorgWarner has since discontinued the SRA and released a brushless retrofit specification as the only current service path.

What's in the Kit

Built to the latest BorgWarner service specification, this kit contains everything needed to retrofit the discontinued SRA to the new brushless actuator design:

  • 1 brushless electronic actuator assembly with integrated linkage
  • 1 New actuator mounting bracket
  • 1 New thermal spacer
  • 2 M8 × 20mm flange head bolts
  • 1 M8 × 35mm flange head bolt
  • 4 M6 × 16mm flange head bolts
  • 1 M6 nut (linkage / dog-bone)

Note: The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-014 VGT arm puller is required for removal of the original actuator arm from the dog-bone shaft and is sold separately.

What Changed vs the Original SRA

  • Brushless motor — eliminates the brushed motor and plastic gear train that fails on the SRA
  • No water cooling — the new actuator does not need coolant routed to it; the cooling block and short hose to the reservoir are removed entirely
  • Higher temperature tolerance — rated for hotter ambient temps and survives the V2S exhaust heat soak
  • Higher torque capability — better authority to overcome carbon-loaded VGT mechanisms
  • Self-calibrating — no scan tool relearn required; auto-calibrates on first key-on and full-span sweeps after the ECU reports VGT data
  • Same packaging profile — bolts into the same location as the original SRA using the supplied new bracket

Coolant Line Reroute

The original SRA used a small coolant block on the actuator with a short hose connecting to the coolant reservoir. The new brushless actuator does not require water cooling. During installation:

  • Remove the actuator coolant block from the original SRA — it is not reused
  • Remove the short u-shaped hose that ran between the actuator coolant block and the reservoir — it is not reused
  • Reroute the remaining shielded coolant hose directly to the reservoir connection that previously fed the actuator coolant block
  • The cooling circuit closes without modification — no additional fittings or plugs required

When to Install This Kit

  • P132B Turbocharger Boost Control "A" Performance code
  • P0045 / P0046 VGT control circuit codes
  • P0299 Underboost or P0234 Overboost codes
  • Erratic, oscillating, or stuck boost gauge readings
  • Slow VGT response when commanded duty cycle changes with a scan tool
  • Coolant weeping from the actuator coolant block or its short hose to the reservoir
  • Any time the original SRA has failed — the SRA is discontinued and the brushless retrofit is the only current service path

Installation Procedure

Built to the latest BorgWarner service procedure. The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-014 arm puller is required and sold separately.

Original SRA Removal:

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable
  2. Remove the M6 nut and separate the linkage from the dog-bone
  3. Disconnect both coolant hoses from the SRA actuator coolant block
  4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the SRA
  5. Remove the three M8 bolts holding the SRA bracket to the turbocharger
  6. Use the SL-270-014 arm puller to release the actuator arm from the dog-bone shaft if needed
  7. Remove the SRA assembly and the original thermal spacer from the turbocharger and discard both

Brushless Retrofit Installation:

  1. Rotate the dog-bone by hand to confirm the VGT mechanism moves freely; clean carbon as needed
  2. Ensure the mounting surfaces and threads on the bearing housing are clean and free of debris
  3. Mount the new thermal spacer and actuator bracket to the turbocharger bearing housing using the supplied M8 bolts; torque to 19±1 Nm
  4. Insert the actuator linkage end into the dog-bone and loosely thread the M6 nut by hand
  5. Install the new actuator to the bracket using the four supplied M6 bolts and torque to 13.5±1.1 Nm
  6. Tighten the M6 dog-bone nut to 10.5±0.3 Nm
  7. Reroute the existing coolant lines directly to the reservoir — the SRA coolant block and short feed hose are eliminated
  8. Reconnect the electrical connector and battery
  9. Start the engine and rev to approximately 20% throttle — the new actuator will auto-calibrate by performing a full-span sweep against ECU feedback
  10. Clear any stored DTCs and verify VGT response with a scan tool
