The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-013 is a replacement VGT actuator thermal spacer for the V2S high-pressure turbocharger on 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke applications. The thermal spacer sits between the turbocharger bearing housing and the actuator bracket — it is the heat barrier that keeps exhaust-side temperatures from soaking into the electronic actuator. A damaged, warped, or missing thermal spacer is a common cause of premature actuator failure on this platform. Always install a new thermal spacer any time the actuator or actuator bracket is removed from the turbocharger.
How the 6.4L V2S Turbo System Works
The 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke uses the BorgWarner V2S compound turbo system — a fixed-geometry low-pressure (LP) turbo feeding a variable-geometry high-pressure (HP) turbo. The HP turbo controls boost across the entire RPM range using a ring of pivoting vanes inside the turbine housing. An electronic actuator mounted on top of the HP turbo drives a rod arm that rotates the unison ring, which simultaneously pivots all of the vanes together. The original Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) used water cooling to survive the heat coming off the turbo. When the SRA fails — and they fail often — the vanes stop responding, boost goes erratic, and the truck throws P132B and related VGT codes.
Why the 6.4L Actuator Fails
The original BorgWarner Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) is the single most common failure on the 6.4L V2S turbo system. The SRA used plastic internal gears that strip when the actuator strains against a carbon-locked or sticking VGT mechanism, and its water-cooled motor housing was prone to coolant ingress and overheating. When the actuator fails, the rod arm stops rotating the unison ring properly, the vanes stick, and the ECM throws P132B (Turbocharger Boost Control “A” Performance) along with under/overboost codes. BorgWarner has since discontinued the SRA and released a brushless retrofit specification as the only current service path.
When to Replace the Thermal Spacer
- Any time the actuator or actuator bracket is removed from the turbo
- Spacer is warped, cracked, deformed, or missing material from heat damage
- Premature actuator failure where the existing spacer shows visible degradation
- Any V2S HP turbo rebuild or service procedure
Installation Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable
- Disconnect the actuator electrical connector and any coolant hoses still connected to the actuator
- Use the SL-270-014 arm puller to release the actuator arm from the dog-bone shaft
- Remove the three M8 bolts and lift the actuator and bracket off the turbocharger
- Remove the old thermal spacer from the bearing housing and discard
- Clean the bearing housing mounting face of any carbon, oil, or old gasket material
- Install the new SPOOLOGIC thermal spacer in the correct orientation per OEM service literature
- Reinstall the actuator bracket and actuator with the original or new M8 bolts and torque to 19±1 Nm
- Reattach the actuator linkage to the dog-bone and torque the M6 nut to 10.5±0.3 Nm
- Reconnect the electrical connector, any coolant hoses, and the battery
- Start the engine and verify VGT response and no coolant leaks
Features
