The SPOOLOGIC EBPV Turbo Outlet Plate SL-370-001 is a complete direct-fit replacement for the factory EBPV outlet plate on the 1994-1997 7.3L Powerstroke — ships with the EBPV butterfly and actuator rod integrated into the plate, plus 4 SPOOLOGIC yellow Viton pedestal O-rings and 3 M8 12-point plate bolts. Backed by a 1-Year Limited Warranty.
The outlet plate is the piece that sits between the turbine housing outlet and the exhaust downpipe. On EBPV-equipped trucks, the plate carries the butterfly valve and actuator rod that make up the EBPV system — the butterfly restricts exhaust flow during cold-start warm-up to build back pressure and speed up engine warm-up. When the butterfly seizes, the actuator rod bends, or the plate cracks from thermal cycling, the whole plate gets replaced together. The SL-370-001 is the direct replacement — new casting, new butterfly, new actuator rod, new O-rings, new bolts.
Why You Replace the Outlet Plate
The outlet plate lives directly in the exhaust stream, right after the turbine housing. Here's what actually goes wrong with these:
- Seized EBPV butterfly — the butterfly is a small flap inside the plate that pivots on a shaft to open or close the exhaust path. Carbon buildup, thermal warpage, and 20+ years of exhaust cycling seize the shaft in the bore. Once seized, the butterfly stays wherever it was last commanded — permanent restriction or no cold-start assist, either way it's a fail.
- Bent or corroded actuator rod — the rod that connects the pedestal-mounted actuator to the butterfly runs through the exhaust stream. Rust, thermal fatigue, and years of vibration bend the rod out of alignment. A bent rod either won't move the butterfly through its full arc or binds mid-travel.
- Cracked plate casting — the plate takes the full thermal load of the exhaust gas plus the mechanical load of the downpipe hanging off it. Aluminum plates crack around the bolt bosses and around the butterfly bore. Once cracked, exhaust leaks between the plate and the turbine housing or between the plate and the downpipe.
- Worn or leaking yellow pedestal O-rings — the outlet plate seals to the pedestal with 4 yellow Viton O-rings that pass engine oil (feed and drain) between the pedestal and the outlet plate side of the assembly. Reused O-rings leak oil into the exhaust side and show up as smoke on startup.
The SL-370-001 replaces the entire plate with a new casting, a fresh butterfly, a straight actuator rod, and new SPOOLOGIC yellow Viton O-rings and plate bolts.
Component Breakdown — What's In the Box
- SPOOLOGIC EBPV outlet plate casting — new aluminum outlet plate with the butterfly bore machined to spec, the actuator rod through-hole clocked correctly, and the plate-to-turbine-housing bolt pattern for the 94-97 TP38 housing (3-bolt pattern).
- EBPV butterfly (integrated) — the butterfly is installed on the shaft inside the plate at the correct clocking. Rotates freely on the shaft to open and close the exhaust path.
- EBPV actuator rod (integrated) — the actuator rod is installed on the butterfly shaft, ready to connect to the OE pedestal-mounted actuator. Straight and true out of the box.
- 4 SPOOLOGIC yellow Viton pedestal O-rings (SL-310-001) — 2 large and 2 small yellow Viton O-rings that seal the outlet plate to the pedestal. 400°F continuous service rated.
- 3 M8 12-point outlet plate bolts — the 94-97 outlet plate fastens to the turbine housing with 3 M8 12-point bolts. 12-point drive is used here because the bolt heads sit in a shallow counterbore — a 12-point socket gets purchase where a hex socket can't.
Material Technology — Why Each Material Was Chosen
- Aluminum outlet plate casting — precision-cast aluminum, dimensionally matched to the OE plate. Aluminum sheds heat fast enough to keep the butterfly shaft bore from binding on shutdown.
- Steel butterfly and actuator rod — heat-resistant steel for the parts that see direct exhaust gas contact. Butterfly is sized to the OE arc so the OE actuator hits full open and full closed without adjustment.
- Yellow Viton fluoroelastomer O-rings — industry-standard fluoroelastomer for hot oil service. 400°F continuous, 500°F intermittent.
- M8 12-point plate bolts — grade-appropriate alloy steel with a 12-point drive head. Sized for the counterbore in the turbine housing.
Install Notes
- Do not reuse the yellow O-rings. Every installation gets the fresh SPOOLOGIC yellow Viton O-rings from the kit.
- Clean the turbine housing outlet mating surface before installing the new plate. Any carbon or old gasket material will prevent the plate from seating flat.
- Torque the outlet plate bolts in a criss-cross pattern to spec. Uneven torque warps the plate and leaves an exhaust leak.
- Verify the actuator rod hits full open and full closed after installation. If the OE pedestal-mounted actuator can't move the butterfly through its full arc, the rod is out of clocking — recheck the install.
