The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-010 is a complete unison ring assembly for the BorgWarner V2S high-pressure turbocharger on 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke applications. This is the full sub-assembly that sits inside the HP turbine housing — unison ring, vanes, turbine housing, mounting ring, and the three bolts and three spacers that hold the cartridge together as a service unit. When the V2S HP-side VGT mechanism is seized, scored, or carbon-locked, this assembly drops in as a complete replacement for the entire vane pack rather than rebuilding it piece by piece.
How the 6.4L V2S Turbo System Works
The 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke uses the BorgWarner V2S compound turbo system — a fixed-geometry low-pressure (LP) turbo feeding a variable-geometry high-pressure (HP) turbo. The HP turbo controls boost across the entire RPM range using a ring of pivoting vanes inside the turbine housing. An electronic actuator mounted on top of the HP turbo drives a rod arm that rotates the unison ring, which simultaneously pivots all of the vanes together. The original Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) used water cooling to survive the heat coming off the turbo. When the SRA fails — and they fail often — the vanes stop responding, boost goes erratic, and the truck throws P132B and related VGT codes.
When to Replace the Unison Ring Assembly
- Cartridge teardown reveals scored, warped, or carbon-glazed vanes that won't free up after cleaning
- Unison ring is blue-heated, cracked, or seized in its track
- VGT mechanism is locked open or closed and cannot be freed mechanically
- Vane shaft bores are pitted, oversized, or stepped
- P132B, P0299, or P0234 codes persist after a new actuator and rod have been installed
- Any HP turbo service where the original VGT pack is beyond cleanup
Installation Procedure
The unison ring assembly is installed during a complete V2S HP turbo teardown. Standard procedure:
- Remove the V2S turbo assembly from the truck and separate the HP turbo from the LP turbo
- Remove the actuator from the HP turbo using the SL-270-014 arm puller to free the arm from the dog-bone
- Disassemble the HP turbine housing from the CHRA
- Lift the original unison ring / vane assembly out of the turbine housing as a unit
- Clean the bearing housing and surrounding surfaces of carbon, coke, and exhaust deposits
- Install the new SPOOLOGIC unison ring assembly into the turbine housing, oriented per OEM service literature
- Install the three mounting bolts with the three spacers and torque to BorgWarner spec
- Confirm all vanes pivot freely and uniformly when the unison ring is rotated by hand at the dog-bone
- Reassemble the HP turbine housing to the CHRA with new V-band clamp and torque to spec
- Install a new SPOOLOGIC SL-270-013 thermal spacer and reinstall the actuator bracket and actuator
- Re-install the V2S assembly on the engine using new gaskets and torque all fasteners to OEM spec
- Start the engine and verify smooth VGT response with a scan tool
