The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-004 is a complete VGT cartridge refresh kit for 2003 Ford 6.0L Powerstroke applications. It pairs one SPOOLOGIC unison ring with a set of nine 15mm tall early-style vanes — everything needed to restore the two highest-wear internal components inside the GT3782VA VGT cartridge in a single kit. Use this kit when rebuilding a 2003 cartridge with stuck vanes, a scored unison ring, sluggish boost response, or VGT-related fault codes.
How the 6.0L VGT Works
The GT3782VA is a variable geometry turbocharger. Inside the turbine housing sits a ring of nine pivoting vanes that act like adjustable nozzle blades. The PCM commands a hydraulic solenoid that pressurizes an oil piston, which rotates the unison ring, which pivots all nine vanes together. At low engine speed the vanes close down to accelerate exhaust velocity and spool the turbine quickly. At high engine speed the vanes open up to flow more exhaust and prevent overspeed. Three parts wear together: the vanes, the unison ring they pivot, and the solenoid that drives the whole mechanism.
2003 vs 2004.5+ Vane Compatibility — Not Interchangeable
Ford revised the GT3782VA VGT cartridge during the 2004 model year. The two vane sizes are physically different and are not interchangeable:
- 2003 model year — 15mm tall vanes (use SL-270-002 vanes or SL-270-004 kit)
- 2004.5-2007 Super Duty, 2004-2010 Econoline, 2004-2005 Excursion — 13.2mm tall vanes (use SL-270-003 vanes or SL-270-005 kit)
2004 is the cutover year — Ford built both versions during 2004. Before ordering, check your engine build date and pull the cartridge to measure existing vane height. Installing the wrong vane height will jam the unison ring, lock the VGT mechanism, and can destroy the cartridge.
When to Replace the Unison Ring
- VGT codes such as P132B, P0299, P0046, or P003A
- Sluggish boost response, slow spool, or "dead-pedal" feel below 2,000 RPM
- Overboost or underboost complaints with no obvious leak or exhaust issue
- Cartridge teardown reveals a scored, blue-heated, or carbon-glazed ring
- Any time vanes are being replaced — always replace the ring with the vanes
- Any time the cartridge is opened for service
When to Replace the Vanes
- VGT codes such as P132B, P0299, P0046, or P003A that don't clear with a solenoid replacement
- Stuck, seized, or sticky vanes during manual rotation of the unison ring on a teardown
- Visible pitting, cracking, or step wear on vane airfoils or shafts
- Carbon-locked vanes from extended idling or short-trip duty cycles
- Any cartridge rebuild after high mileage or thermal damage
Installation Procedure
The unison ring and vanes are installed inside the VGT cartridge during a turbo teardown. Standard procedure:
- Remove the turbo from the truck and separate the turbine housing / VGT cartridge from the CHRA
- Mark the orientation of the unison ring and vanes before disassembly for reference
- Remove the retaining ring and lift the unison ring off the vane pins
- Press each vane shaft out of the nozzle ring and inspect the bores for wear
- Clean all carbon and varnish from the nozzle ring bores and unison ring slots with a wire brush and solvent
- Install the new vanes into the nozzle ring, oriented per OEM service literature
- Place the new unison ring over the vane pins, engaging each pin in its slot
- Confirm all nine vanes pivot smoothly and uniformly when the unison ring is rotated by hand
- Reassemble the cartridge with the retaining ring and proper clocking to the CHRA
- Re-install the turbo on the engine using new pedestal O-rings and torque the V-band clamp to spec
- After install, perform a VGT relearn / actuator sweep with a capable scan tool
