The SPOOLOGIC SL-270-014 is a dedicated service tool for removing the VGT actuator arm from the dog-bone shaft on the BorgWarner V2S high-pressure turbocharger used on 2008-2010 Ford 6.4L Powerstroke applications. The actuator arm is press-fit onto a splined shaft and cannot be safely removed by prying — prying bends the arm, damages the shaft splines, and ruins the VGT mechanism. This puller threads onto the arm and pulls it straight off the shaft cleanly, every time. Required tool for any 6.4L actuator replacement, brushless retrofit installation, or HP turbo teardown.
How the 6.4L V2S Turbo System Works
The 2008-2010 6.4L Powerstroke uses the BorgWarner V2S compound turbo system — a fixed-geometry low-pressure (LP) turbo feeding a variable-geometry high-pressure (HP) turbo. The HP turbo controls boost across the entire RPM range using a ring of pivoting vanes inside the turbine housing. An electronic actuator mounted on top of the HP turbo drives a rod arm that rotates the unison ring, which simultaneously pivots all of the vanes together. The original Smart Remote Actuator (SRA) used water cooling to survive the heat coming off the turbo. When the SRA fails — and they fail often — the vanes stop responding, boost goes erratic, and the truck throws P132B and related VGT codes.
When to Use the Arm Puller
- Removing the original SRA or any brushless retrofit actuator arm from the VGT dog-bone shaft
- Any 6.4L V2S HP turbo actuator replacement
- Brushless retrofit actuator installation — required to remove the original arm from the dog-bone before bracket disassembly
- Any HP turbo teardown or VGT service
Why You Need This Tool
The actuator arm is press-fit onto the VGT dog-bone shaft with internal splines. Prying the arm off with a screwdriver or pry bar will bend the arm, damage the splines on the shaft, and frequently destroy the entire VGT mechanism. There is no shortcut — every shop that services the 6.4L V2S turbo needs this tool on hand. Use is repeatable: thread the puller onto the arm, tighten the center screw, and the arm pulls straight off the shaft cleanly with no damage to either part.
How to Use
- Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the actuator electrical connector
- Loosen and remove the M6 nut that holds the actuator linkage to the dog-bone
- Thread the puller body onto the actuator arm using the threaded interface
- Hand-tighten the puller's center screw against the end of the dog-bone shaft
- Continue turning the center screw with a wrench — the arm will lift straight off the splined shaft
- Remove the puller from the actuator arm
- Inspect the dog-bone shaft splines and the arm bore for damage before reassembly
Do not pry the actuator arm off with a screwdriver or pry bar. The arm is press-fit onto fine splines on the dog-bone shaft. Prying will bend the arm and damage the splines, both of which can destroy the VGT mechanism inside the turbo.
Features
