The backing plate seals the compressor housing to the bearing housing and holds the diffuser ring that controls the airflow exiting the compressor wheel. What the Backing Plate Does

The backing plate seals the compressor housing to the center bearing housing and holds the diffuser surface that the air passes across as it leaves the compressor wheel. A warped, scored, or eroded backing plate causes boost leaks at the compressor-to-CHRA joint and can let the wheel contact the plate face. Replacing a damaged backing plate with a new machined unit restores the sealing face and the diffuser profile.
